It's not exactly the hardest of the "hard" sci-fi, yet it's firm. Not that anything like this ought to amaze us originating from a creator with a PhD in cosmology. Where the truths leave off and Reynolds starts extrapolating, it's with a researcher's eye for subtle element and an intense creative energy filling in the story.
